BLUFFDALE, Utah -- A lane split Tuesday night along I-15 in the southbound lanes had drivers crawling along between 146th and SR 92.

It became even worse when an unexpected pavement repair forced crews to shut down the far right lane, which forced traffic to bottleneck into one lane.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the lane will remain closed for most of Wednesday. Drivers can use the frontage road to beat the traffic.

UDOT spokesman John Gleason said they would try to get it back open for the Wednesday evening's rush hour commute.

"We know it's frustrating but we are working to open that up as soon as possible," said Gleason.

The lane split is part of the UDOT's two-year project to widen I-15 to six lanes in each direction, in a six mile stretch from Utah County to Salt Lake County. The split will go from 146th South in Bluffdale to State Route 92 in Lehi.

UDOT said the project is in anticipation of the area's growing population.

Drivers planning to exit at 146th South or State Route 92 will need to stay in the right two lanes.

The goal of the lane splits is to allow drivers to keep using the highway during construction.
