SALT LAKE CITY — Former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson is threatening to file a lawsuit against the federal government, and he said the National Security Agency spied on people in Utah during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

“It was the golden opportunity for the FBI and the NSA to work together and basically put a cone over these geographical areas and grab everything they could get from everybody,” Anderson alleged, adding: “We have to stand up against these kinds of abuses.”

Anderson claims the NSA spied on all email and text communications in Salt Lake City for a period just before and during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The allegations of spying at the Olympic Games came out in a Wall Street Journal report two years ago, and since that time Anderson has been putting together his lawsuit.

The 2002 games occurred five months after the September 11 attacks, so there was heightened security.

Anderson said he’s seeking more plaintiffs to join in, for more information, click here.
