DRAPER, Utah — New lane splits are scheduled to begin early Wednesday morning on southbound Interstate 15 as part of the Point of the Mountain project, officials announced Tuesday.

The split will stretch from 14600 South to State Route 92, according to Utah Department of Transportation. To accommodate installation of the lane split, the southbound off-ramp at S.R.92 is scheduled to close from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

UDOT officials say the 2100 North/1200 West exit has been set up as an alternate route for southbound motorists.

A similar lane split is already in place on a northbound section of I-15 within the construction zone.

“These lane splits allow crews to continue working in the middle of the freeway while keeping all four traffic lanes open during the daytime,” UDOT officials say.

Along with the lane splits, officials say, I-15 will be reduced to one lane in each direction nightly between S.R. 92 and 12300 South for paving and road widening. These restrictions are in place as early as 9 p.m. up to seven nights a week.

The Point of the Mountain project will widen I-15 to six lanes in each direction from Lehi to Draper. The construction is schedule to continue through the fall of 2016.
