HEBER, Utah – Police say a man was posing as a waiter at The Sidetrack Cafe in Heber when he took a female customer’s credit card and went on a shopping spree.
Surveillance video captured images of the man as he was leaving a local Walmart.
“She just thought it was somebody who worked there,” said Sgt. Xela Thomas with the Heber City Police Department.
Several witnesses called in with tips Tuesday afternoon after police posted the images to Facebook, and the suspect was later arrested.
Fifty-four-year-old David Skiby is facing two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, each third-degree felonies.
Restaurant owner Janine McKenty said the man has been trying to get a job at her restaurant for months, but she refused to hire him.
“And then, he came around here another time and just ordered water and started mooching cigarettes from customers,” she said. “And I just told him, ‘you can’t be here, you just can’t be here,’ and asked him to leave.”
Frequent customers say they’re surprised to hear of something like this happening at the restaurant.
“I think it’s awful,” said Megan Russell, a longtime customer. “It’s a violation of, you know, your trust as a customer.”
McKenty said she’ll be keeping a closer watch on activities at her cafe in the future.
“It’s a great violation,” she said. “I like to make sure that people get their money back.
Police say this incident is a good reminder that credit card fraud can happen anywhere and sometimes when people least expect it.
FOX 13 reached out to the victim of the crime but she was unavailable for comment.
