SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Highway Patrol released traffic enforcement statistics over the Pioneer Day holiday weekend Monday.

During the July 24 weekend, UHP troopers worked more than 400 shifts making 2,648 traffic stops, which resulted in 41 DUI arrests, according to UHP officials Monday.

Troopers wrote 1,717 speeding tickets, 65 distracted driving citations and investigated 82 crashes. UHP officials think those wearing seat belts minimized the seriousness of injuries of those crashes.

“That while this is a one of the busiest travel holidays of the summer, our State Troopers were able to see a real reduction in serious crashes,” said UHP Superintendent Danny Fuhr. “We credit a lot of that reduction with the good choices that drivers are making by using seat belts and not driving while distracted.”

UHP continues to educate the public to wear a seat belt, not drive while impaired, travel the speed limit and keep distractions separate from driving.

“Our goal of zero fatalities is achievable as the motoring public works with law enforcement to do their part in staying safe,” Fuhr said.

Troopers were also able to assist 543 motorists stranded and help get them to their destinations.

State troopers also participated in several parades and worked the Tooele Country Fan Fest.
