SALT LAKE CITY — Kate Kelly has submitted her resignation from the board of directors of the group Ordain Women, according to a post from the organization–which works to address what members view as gender inequality within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Kelly made national headlines for her role with the group, which held rallies and other events aimed at raising awareness of their concerns, which included a desire for women to be ordained to the LDS Church’s priesthood.

The members and supporters of Ordain Women had also marched on Temple Square in 2013 in an attempt to gain entry to the historically male-only priesthood session of the LDS Church’s semi-annual General Conference but were denied. Subsequent efforts to attend the meeting in person were also ineffective, though the LDS Church did begin broadcasting the meeting online so anyone who wanted to could watch.

Kelly was excommunicated from the LDS Church in 2014. Kelly was among those who founded Ordain Women in 2013.

Mary Ellen Robertson, the Utah spokeswoman for Ordain Women, confirms to FOX 13 News that Kelly has decided to move on and has resigned her position.

The announcement was also made via Facebook on Ordain’ Women’s page. According to the statement, “She was the catalyst and has served as one of our most recognizable voices. She has given her time and energy to help make this movement possible.”
