SALT LAKE CITY — Internet behemoth Google has begun construction on its fiber network in Utah’s capitol city.
In an email sent to prospective customers on Wednesday, Google Fiber announced it had finished the planning phase and had begun laying portions of the network underground.

“This bright orange roll of conduit covers our fiber to protect it from the elements as we lay it underground. We’ll be installing enough fiber in Salt Lake City to run from here to Canada,” Google said in the email.
A Google rep said the company has not set a completion date for Google Fiber, which boasts 1GB-per-second upload/download speeds. The Salt Lake City Council approved access to the city’s infrastructure to build it. Google Fiber will compete with other networks and Internet Service Providers, including Utah-based XMission, CenturyLink and Xfinity.
