ROOSEVELT, Utah – An armed man was shot and killed by a police officer in Roosevelt Sunday after police responded to a call about a man with a gun who was acting erratically.

According to a press release from the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, police responded to the area near the Uintah Basin Medical Center around 12:33 p.m. Sunday after someone reported a man with a handgun was acting erratically.

The man, identified as 36-year-old Kevin Vance Norton, was currently on felony probation and not allowed to possess a firearm. As officers approached, the man fled to a nearby wooded area with a creek.

The press release states that, “After negotiations and less than lethal attempts to disarm Norton failed, he was shot by a Roosevelt Police Officer at about [1:27 p.m.].”

Norton was taken to the Uintah Basin Medical Center within minutes of the shooting, where he died due to his injuries.

Local officials have requested an investigation from the Utah State Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure. According to the press release, The Uintah County Attorney has agreed to screen the case and determine if the use of deadly force was justified.
