Semi bursts into flames sending $500,000 of goods up in smoke

VIRGIN RIVER GORGE, Ariz. – About $500,000 of merchandise is up in smoke after a semi truck caught fire on I-15 while driving through the Virgin River Gorge.

Thursday afternoon the truck driver told the Arizona Department of Public Safety he heard a popping noise, pulled over and discovered one of the fuel tanks was on fire.

Authorities said the accident shut down traffic on I-15 for several hours backing things up for more than 10 miles.

Officials said the truck contained a variety of merchandise including health and fitness supplies, vitamins, Zumba gear, mannequin heads and electronics.
