NEW DELHI -- A bride in India walked out of her wedding after the groom failed to correctly answer a simple math problem.

According to reports, the ceremony took place on Wednesday near the town of Kanpur in northern Uttar Pradesh state.

The question was: How much is 15 plus six? The groom answered 17.

An upset bride told the groom's family she left because she was misled about his education. She refused to return.

"The groom's family kept us in the dark about his poor education," Mohar Singh, the bride's father, told the Associated Press. "Even a first grader can answer this."

Police mediated between the families and all the jewelry and gifts exchanged between the families was returned.

According to tradition, most Indian weddings are arranged by the families. The bride and groom rarely meet before the wedding day.

This is why arranged marriages are a load of bull. It’s too easy for the families to play up their son or daughter’s skills or outright lie about their weaknesses. So math is the dude’s weakness. Big deal. I can’t solve that question without using my fingers (since my math ability was sacrificed in favor of a strong grasp of English) but hell if that dictates if I’d be a good wife. This is yet another story where I want to smack some sense into people like this with a frozen salmon.

If you cannot answer 15 + 6 without a calculator and your justification is your math is bad due to strong english. Then I pity you. This is not a high level mathematics equation. This is every day math, if you have to go buy groceries you’ll need such math to calculate exact change. Do you open a calculator at every department store or grocery store at the mall? You may be a good wife albeit you’ll also be stupid one with finances and cause reckless losses. You’ll also not be able to guide your children in doing basic homework. That’s something anyone sensible would wanna run away from. Not to mention here it’s the groom, the guy who is supposedly going to be the main breadwinner of the family, thanks to tradition that again dictates that the guy should earn more than his wife etc. etc. I wouldn’t blame the girl, but I do blame the parents and sick customs that don’t let people meet and decide if they want to marry each other.
