NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah – Two homes in North Salt Lake were evacuated Sunday afternoon after a fire broke out in a nearby home.

Police responded to reports of a suicidal woman at a home near 1100 North and 260 East at around 4:30 p.m.

When crews arrived, the doors to the home were locked, and police say that as they tried to help, a fire broke out in her front room. Fire crews were able to force their way in to put the fire out and rescue the woman.

“That`s a very difficult decision because you don`t know what`s going on inside the house but that fire is obviously going to either take a life or start a catastrophe in this type environment where our homes are so closely situated together,” said Jeff Bassett, South Davis Metro Fire.

Some nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, but those residents have since been allowed to return.

The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and other medical issues.
