SALT LAKE CITY – Hundreds of middle and high school students showed of their skills at a regional Science Olympiad competition on Saturday.

More than 450 students from 30 schools across northern Utah gathered at Westminster College for the Fifth Annual Regional Science Olympiad competition.

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets; teams compete in 30 different events ranging from experimental design and physics to air trajectory.

The goal of the competition is to foster and inspire students to pursue careers in STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – fields.

“We know that Utah is underrepresented in STEM graduates throughout college, and research has shown that people who graduate in STEM disciplines earn more money, they have better jobs, they have better job opportunities. So we would love to foster that interest in STEM disciplines,” said Jaimi Butler, Science Olympiad coordinator.

Regional competitions qualify teams for the larger state competition.
