MONESSEN, Pa. – A Pennsylvania middle school is trying to explain how a group of kids ended up with a “50 Shades of Grey” themed word search.

“Spanking.” “Submissive.” Those are some of the more tame words found in this word search puzzle.

James Carter’s 13-year-old son brought home the paper from Monessen Middle School Wednesday.

WTAE said the puzzle is based on the bestselling erotic book and upcoming movie, “50 Shades of Grey.”

Carter said the puzzle, with adult material, was handed out to at least five students in the 8th grade.

“I asked my son who passed it out, he said that the teacher passed it out,” Carter said. “I don’t think this is what they should be doing in the 8th grade level.”

The concerned father told WTAE no one at the school would explain how it happened.

The school board told WTAE, “We just learned of this issue, just yesterday, and an investigation will occur.”

School officials would not say which staff members were involved in passing out the puzzles; they said it is a personnel matter.

However, a school board member responded in an email:

“It was a huge but unintentional error and collected from the five students involved as soon as it was realized. Unfortunately, one copy was taken by a student who then posted it on social media.”

School officials would not say if any staff members involved have been disciplined.
