SANPETE COUNTY - It was a senseless crime targeting two senior citizens in Mt. Pleasant, and a court appearance three years in the making.

Logan McFarland, 27, went before a judge in Manti Wednesday.

He is accused of killing 70-year-old Leroy Fullwood and 69-year-old Dorothy Ann Fullwood at their home on December 29, 2011.

"[We hope] that all the steps were followed, that he has a fair trial, and we get the justice we're looking for," said the couple's son, Michael Fullwood.

McFarland was only recently extradited to Utah. The judge went over the six charges he's facing in an initial court appearance Wednesday, including two counts of aggravated murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery.

"My hopes are that justice is brought to the citizens of Sanpete County, the people of the state of Utah and the Fullwood family," said Sanpete County Attorney Brody Keisel.

McFarland is accused of shooting and killing the Fullwoods while burglarizing their home on December 29, 2011. He and his girlfriend led police on a chase in Nevada in a hijacked car, but got away. They were captured on January 3, 2012 after a rancher found them walking in the desert. It took three years to file charges against McFarland and extradite him to Utah.

The judge will be appointing McFarland a death penalty qualified attorney and will announce that attorney on March 11.

The Fullwood family said they're grateful for the support they've received.

"We have a strong support system, the community's been great. And the places where we work have been very supportive and we're doing quite well," Michael Fullwood said.
