SALT LAKE CITY — A city-subsidized mass transit pass for residents may be back.

FOX 13 confirmed late Friday the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office is asking the city council to approve spending more than $323,000 to keep the “HIVE Pass” going from March until the end of June.

From the budget proposal:

HIVE PASS BUDGET 2

In a budget proposal filed with the council and obtained by FOX 13 on Friday, the mayor’s office said 3,200 passes were sold between February-November 2014. The HIVE Pass, a joint venture between the Utah Transit Authority and Salt Lake City, offered deeply-discounted bus and train passes to city residents. It was put on the shelf when sales did not meet expectations.

The city had been negotiating with UTA to keep the passes going.

If the council wanted to keep the HIVE pass going into 2016, the city would need to spend nearly $1 million, according to the budget amendment obtained by FOX 13. But under that proposal, Frontrunner would be excluded. There would also be a cap of 2,500 passes active per month.

The Salt Lake City Council will review the request on Tuesday.
