SALT LAKE CITY — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is coming up on Monday, and to usher in the holiday volunteers at ten different Salt Lake organizations came together Saturday for a day of service.

More than 200 volunteers spent Saturday morning working on various service projects.

They performed seemingly routine tasks like cleaning, mopping and vacuuming. But University of Utah students who were involved said it was a privilege to help someone in need.

Bryce Williams, Coordinator for the Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah, spoke about their efforts.

“We are doing this day of service in honor of Dr. King,” he said. “Dr. King was very much about serving the community, as we all know, and we just want to serve our local community as well. It’s a very good way to give back to our local community.”

Saturday’s service projects are just the first events in an upcoming week of events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.

The University of Utah will host a march and parade as well as a film screening, and there are several other events planned as well. Click here for a schedule of events.
