SALT LAKE CITY — Warm soup and warm coats were plentiful at Pioneer Park Thursday because of an informal annual tradition.

For the past 8 years, a group of Park City residents have spent New Year’s Day in Salt Lake City’s Pioneer Park.

They collect coats during the year and prepare homemade soup. Then they share the goods with those in need.

“We’re blessed with what we have, and we feel it important that we share with somebody else,” said participant Dar Hendrickson. “And there’s been a few people actually choked up when they come to talk to us, to thank us, and they bless us, and that’s very kind. It warms you.”

The Park City ski team contributed coats and gloves this year, and the Park City Market donated food. Many who volunteered at the event said they planned to return next year.
