SALT LAKE CITY -- A brand new Salt Lake City tradition lit up the sky New Year’s Eve. When the clock struck midnight, a laser show was performed along with the display of a new mirror ball outside the Salt Palace.

Thousands of people gathered outside and inside the Salt Palace to bring in 2015.

The laser show and mirror ball are replacing a massive fireworks show that has been shown for several years in the past. The new tradition garnered mixed reviews.

“You see your future in it, and hopefully it’s a good one,” said Kimberly Blackburn with a laugh.

Blackburn was one of the brave party goers to venture outside where there was plenty of music and dancing.

"It sounded like fun, the lights, the action, it's definitely a good way to bring in the new year," Blackburn said of the light show and mirror ball.

Blake Jones had a different reaction to the mirror ball.

“If it would have dropped I think it would have been a little more cooler to actually see it come down – but I don’t know,” Jones said. “It was different – but I like the fireworks.”

For those not outside working on their footwork, they were adjusting their neck, to look up at the 20-foot wide, 2,300-pound mirror ball.

"The ball is very, very, cool looking," Jack Gruber said.

It's one New Year’s tradition that has quickly been embraced by families.
