SOUTH JORDAN, Utah - Days after announcing that "The Interview" would not be released, Sony has changed its mind and will be releasing the controversial Seth Rogan comedy in a limited number of theaters starting Christmas Day, including several in Utah.

The studio canceled the release of "The Interview" after threats from hackers prompted theaters across the country to decide not to show the film. Backlash to the decision was fierce and widespread, with criticism even coming from President Obama, who called the cancellation a mistake.

Several theaters, including the Movie Grille in Ogden, the District in South Jordan and Brewvies in Salt Lake City, will show the film beginning Christmas Day.

"Our customers are asking to play this picture. We feel we have an obligation to our customers to fulfill their wishes. We also feel we have a right to play what we want to play without restrictions, but we're not going to get involved in the controversy going on there," said Norman Chesler, consultant for Brewvies. "We do have our security that we normally have, and we feel we have no problems playing this picture."

The District already uses South Jordan Police officers for security, and they've asked for more help to keep everyone safe.

"Although the police department does not comment on specific staffing and operational issues, the District has asked for additional staffing and increased officers while the movie is being shown," the South Jordan Police Department wrote in a statement.

More theaters could begin playing the movie in the coming weeks, and Sony plans to release the movie through video-on-demand.
