SALT LAKE CITY — Federal prosecutors have appealed a judge’s decision to lop decades off of a Brigham City pain doctor’s sentence for illegally prescribing millions of painkillers.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Utah filed an appeal with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver on Friday morning. It asks the appeals court to overturn a federal judge’s decision to drop Dr. Dewey MacKay’s sentence from 20 years to 36 months with credit for time served.

MacKay was convicted of prescribing millions of pain pills, including some that resulted in a man’s death.
