SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — Unified Police confirmed a federal fugitive was booked into jail early Friday morning after leading police on a high speed chase in western Salt Lake County.

It started around 1:00 near 3100 S 9000 W when an officer ran a license plate on a car and discovered the owner was wanted on federal warrants.

Police said they attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect fled east on 3100 S.  The suspect then pulled into a neighborhood near 5600 W and officers lost sight of him.

Officers set up a perimeter around the neighborhood and spotted the suspect again. The pursuit then continued for another 20 blocks and police lost sight of the suspect again.

Hoyal said the suspect drove at speeds up to 100 mph during the chase.

“As officers were checking the neighborhood, trying to locate him, one of our officers was coming eastbound down 4650 South, spotted the vehicle as it was coming right at him,” said Lt. Justin Hoyal, Unifie Police Department. “The suspect put the vehicle into reverse, backed up at a high rate of speed trying to get away from our officer and ultimately backed into a parked Ford pickup truck.”

At that point, the suspect surrendered to police and was taken into custody. Police said they discovered marijuana, suspected methamphetamine and what appears to be stolen items.

The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on the warrant. Police said other charges are likely to be filed, including drug charges and fleeing from police.
