SALT LAKE CITY -- Mayor Ralph Becker Monday announced his plans to seek a third term.

At his campaign announcement, Becker talked about his efforts in the last seven years to revitalize downtown with new shops, businesses and major developments like City Creek and the Eccles Theatre.

He also talked about transportation in the city, pointing out the airport Trax line, new bike lanes and foot paths as major achievements.

“Until we can make sure everyone in the city has easy mobility access, our job is still very much in front of us,” Becker said.

Only one city councilman Luke Garrott has announced his plan to take on Becker.

Garrott said people don't care about fancy malls and theatres when their concerned about the cost of living and education.

“I am running for mayor because I would like to see a different agenda, an agenda focused on people,” Garrott said. “On education, on after school program, on parks and neighborhood -- really the bread and butter of government rather than big fancy legacy luxury buildings that I see our current mayor more interested in.”

Political scientist Tim Chambless with the Hinckley Institute points out the similarities between the two candidates. Both are Democrat middle-aged white men, with distinguished political positions in the community.

“It's maybe on style that you could see a distinction,” Chambless said “It comes down to the public’s view of them as likable candidates.”

The Republican Party says it's considering names but doesn't yet have a candidate.

Salt Lake City hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1971.
