LOGAN, Utah – An administrator at Utah State University has been fired after he was accused of sexual assault in September, though county officials declined to pursue the case due to what they called a lack of sufficient evidence.

The alleged assault was reported to Logan police September 5, and on September 11 Marvin Roberts, who is the school’s Assistant Vice President of Student Engagement and Diversity, was put on paid administrative leave.

Roberts was terminated on September 18.

“Once the details of our inquiry became clear, including information we received from Mr. Roberts himself, it was, there was no question it was very appropriate to terminate him,” said Tim Vitale, who is USU’s Executive Director of Public Relations and Marketing.

Vitale said Roberts’ dismissal is a personnel matter.

Logan police turned the case over to the Cache County Attorney’s Office, where it was declined on the basis of insufficient evidence.

The USU Statesmen reports that Roberts was a student at USU in the '60s and '70s and received attention for his performance in college basketball during the 1970 championships. The Statesmen also reports Roberts went on to play with ABA teams as well as the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. He was hired by USU for the position in July of 2013.
