ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Thirteen Marching bands from Utah schools played their hearts out at a regional band competition featuring bands form eight different states.

The American Fork High School marching band has been practicing all season for this performance; band member Kaden Maxwell said they’ve focused their attention on musical ambitions.

“Rehearsals just about every day,” she said. “And during the school year, rehearsals after school, just about every day. So, we're all behind on school work a little bit.”

American Fork was one of 29 different high schools from eight states who competed Saturday in the Bands of America Regional Championship.

Cam Stasa, Bands of America Championship director, said the competition represents the top-tier.

“At the end of the day, and we have truly felt this for 39 years, that these students are showing great commitment,” he said. “These are the best kids in their schools.”

The American Fork High School marching band already has various awards behind it, including marching in some national parades. But band members said this what they love the most, as it really gives them a chance to perform and show off their talent.

“We're away from school, we're away from drama, and we get to focus on just this and really get to see what the judges have to say, and so far it's been really good,” ensemble member Kirstina Kohler said.

The American Fork students won the overall regional award and were first in their class at the state championships Friday.

Tim Osborn is the father of one of the band members, and he said he’s proud of their efforts.

“It's just a culmination of that  hard work,” he said. “As parents, how do you put it, it’s something that makes them feel good, and you're grateful for that."
