SALT LAKE CITY – Six people were taken to hospitals Thursday afternoon after a crash involving three vehicles on State Route 201 that began after a motorcyclist stopped to offer help to a group who had pulled over with a flat tire.

The crash occurred on eastbound SR-201 around 2:30 p.m., and Utah Department of Transportation officials tweeted that eastbound 201 was closed at 3400 West in Salt Lake County due to a crash that blocked three lanes of traffic. The road was reopened by about 6 p.m.

Utah Highway Patrol officials said a vehicle had a flat tire and pulled over to the left of the road. A motorcyclist stopped to help but was hit by a car, and that vehicle then impacted the first vehicle that had stopped. The vehicle that had pulled over had two women and two children, ages 3 and 4, inside the vehicle.

Sgt. David Moreno, UHP, said six people were transported for medical care and that the motorcyclist was transported via medical helicopter. Details about the specific nature and severity of the injuries are unknown.

Traffic cameras at the scene of the crash showed emergency responders in the area and traffic backed up on the highway and along an on-ramp.
