SALT LAKE CITY -- A Weber County Sheriff’s lieutenant was awarded the Congressional Badge of Bravery Tuesday for his heroic acts in January 2012.

Two years ago Lt. Nathan Hutchinson was shot four times in the line of duty while trying to save the lives of his fellow officers.

On Jan. 4, 2012, Hutchinson was part of a team of Utah law enforcement officers trying to execute a knock and announce search warrant at the home of Matthew David Stewart.

Once officers entered the home, Stewart opened fire, killing Agent Jared Francom.

Three strike force members were shot and two were unconscious on the ground. That’s when Hutchinson entered the home to save his fellow fallen officers.

“While many others of course move away from the sound of gunfire our charge as police officers is to move into the sound of gunfire to protect the innocent,” said Weber County Sheriff Terry Thompson.

Senators Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee along with other law enforcement officers and public leaders honored Hutchinson with the Congressional Badge of Bravery.

“While it’s an honor to me to be here, I’m really accepting this on behalf of everyone that night that showed exceptional bravery,” Hutchinson said.
