SALT LAKE CITY – Organ, eye and tissue donors were honored in Salt Lake City Saturday as 488 names were etched into a glass monument.

The names were added to the Celebration of Life Monument at Library Square, and the ceremony aimed to honor those who have donated, organs, eyes and tissue during the past year.

Tracy Schmidt, Executive Director for Intermountain Donor Services, spoke about the significance of the ceremony.

“Most of the people that came today were honoring a family member or a close friend that passed away this past year, or past couple of years, and gave that gift of life and an opportunity to remember them in a very positive way because of the things that they were able to do in that decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor,” he said.

The names added Saturday bring the monument’s total to 5,445 names, according to a press release from event organizers. There are plans to remodel the monument to create space for additional names in the future.
