WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- Dennis Nordfelt, former superintendent of Utah Highway Patrol and former police chief and mayor for West Valley City, has died at age 71.

Nordfelt died Saturday likely due to complications from pneumonia.

Nordfelt was mayor of West Valley City for eight years.

The current mayor, Ron Bigelow released the following statement Saturday:

It was with great sorrow that I learned that our former West Valley City Mayor and Police Chief Dennis Nordfelt passed away today. He spent many years serving this community and his efforts helped shape our city and made it stronger. His positive influence was also felt far beyond our city in programs, events and especially in the lives of many people in our state. He leaves a tremendous legacy for all of us. On behalf of the city, I want to offer our condolences to his family and express our support to them during this time.

Most recently, Nordfelt was serving as a commissioner for Utah's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

I am really sorry to hear this. Nordfelt was one of the neatest men I have had the privilege to meet. I met him and was introduced in a passing moment once. More than a year later, I was sitting in a large audience where he was speaking, and he called on me BY NAME to answer a question he had posed.

A single introduction, at a brief encounter, and he remembered my name a year later. I was blown away.
