MURRAY, Utah – Police were looking for a man they said should be considered armed and dangerous after he fled from police at high speeds early Sunday morning, but officials said Sunday night the man had been taken into custody.
Unified Police Department officials tweeted around 9:43 p.m. that Jorge H. Zamora had been arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail “by and thanks to West Jordan PD.”
Things started when a chase began in the area of 7800 South State Street around 2:26 a.m. when police attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle believed to have been involved in multiple robberies.
Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department said the vehicle fled and a chase ensued that reached speeds of up to 80 mph and went on for about 11 minutes. Hoyal said there was little to no traffic on the road.
An officer attempted a PIT maneuver on the vehicle, but Hoyal said it was not successful and that the vehicle rammed the police car and kept going.
At one point in the chase, the vehicle went through a fence near an apartment complex. The vehicle eventually went down over a dirt berm and wound up near some railroad tracks. The chase terminated in the area of 100 West Fireclay Ave.
Police said Zamora then fled on foot. Zamora was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants and Hoyal said he should be considered armed and dangerous. Police found ammunition but no weapons inside the vehicle.
Two other individuals who were in the vehicle as it fled were interviewed by police, and it was determined they were not involved in the alleged criminal activity and were released.
Police searched the area for Zamora for about two hours but were unable to locate the man at that time.
