CARBON COUNTY, Utah — Search and rescue crews recovered the body of a man out of the Scofield Reservoir early Sunday morning.

Rescue crews from Carbon County and Utah State Parks received a report of a capsized 14-foot long canoe at approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday. According to the Carbon County Sheriff’s office one of the three men from the canoe was in distress on the north end of the reservoir.

Several witnesses told deputies the victim, identified as Jaran Cruz, 33, of Herriman, was calling for help.

One of the men from the canoe swam to shore and the other stayed with the canoe.

Police say several people with boats went to help Cruz but were unable to find him.

Police say the movement on the canoe caused it capsize and the occupants were unable to put it upright. There were no life jackets on board.

Cruz was found approximately 100 feet from the shore in 20 feet of water, police say. Dive team members were able to recover the victim and his body has been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner.
