KEARNS, Utah – Several homes were evacuated after officers made an arrest and then located something they said appeared to be some kind of explosive device inside a home, but the scene had been cleared and residents allowed to return home later Saturday night.

West Jordan police responded to a home at 6173 South Cumulus Circle in Kearns, where they took a person into custody; police entered the residence to clear it, which is when they found something that appeared to be an explosive.

Officers left the residence, and a bomb technician was called for.

Jared Norton, Unified Fire Authority, said homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated and that residents in other homes in the area were asked to shelter in place. He said he didn’t know how many homes were evacuated.

FOX 13 News crews on scene report that the police activity in the area had ceased by about 9:10 p.m. and that residents were being allowed back into their homes.
