NORTH SALT LAKE -- Crews are working on a hillside in North Salt Lake in the wake of a landslide that destroyed a home earlier this week, and several families have been told it may be some time before they can return to their homes.

Questar gas crews are turning the gas in the area back on for the first time since Tuesday’s slide, and a group of engineers are planning to drill and put in monitoring equipment so they can determine what caused the slide and how to clear the debris without triggering more movement.

Four families have been told they may have to stay out of their homes for at least a month, and many others have packed 72-hour kits and moved belongings out of their homes in case further problems arise.

The Utrilla family’s home was destroyed in the slide, and they’ve asked the city to replace their home. It isn’t clear what, if anything, the city will do regarding the home, but they said a charity golf tournament on the family's behalf has been scheduled for September 26 at the Eaglewood Golf Course.

FOX 13 News’ Gene Kennedy was at the scene of the slide Thursday, see the video above for his report.
