WEST JORDAN, Utah -- A former Canyons School District bus driver charged with sexually abusing special-needs children appeared in court Wednesday at a preliminary hearing that will determine whether there is enough evidence the case to go to trial.

John Carrell, 61, was charged in May with 23 counts of sexual abuse, and then earlier this month he received 11 more charges.

Carrell's cases involve two special needs girls who rode Carrell's bus to and from elementary school.

Four witnesses took the stand at Wednesday's hearing, and the surveillance videos from the bus Carrell drove were shown

Each count against John Carrell carries a maximum punishment of 15 years to life in prison.
