Utah mom convicted of murdering teen daughter in ‘suicide pact’ to be sentenced

WEST JORDAN, Utah – A West Jordan mother who pleaded guilty to murdering her 18-year-old daughter is to be sentenced Tuesday.

Mary Ethyl Hansen, 52, said she made a suicide pact with her daughter, Virginia Ray Hansen, before shooting her in March of 2012.

Police said she then turned the gun on herself but survived the suicide attempt.

Hansen was originally charged with first-degree murder but agreed to a plea deal.

She pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of manslaughter and discharge of a firearm.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
