LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON -- Mountain biking is in full gear at Snowbird as the Ski and Summer Resort celebrates the opening of one of the longest continuous trails in Utah.

The Big Mountain Trail was built with bikers in mind. Over a year in the works, the trail is finally open.

The nearly eight-mile ride starts bikers up 11,000 feet and provides a variety of terrain on the way down.

"It's a 7.5 mile trail that starts at the top of the tram and takes you all the way from the valley back to the tram through some of the most scenic terrain that we have here at the Wasatch," said Dave Fields, Vice President of Resort Operations at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort.

And the Big Mountain Trail is just the first of many more trails to come at Snowbird.

"This is pretty much a step saying the resorts are willing to try and embrace mountain biking in little Cottonwood and Big Cottonwood Canyon," said Ben Blitch, President of Alpine Trails.

The trail is just what bikers in Utah have been waiting for, and they are excited for more.

"Mountain biking is kind of in this new stage that it's growing like a weed and it's fun to be a part of it," said Kyle McInnis of Salt Lake City.

Snowbird is offering rentals and tutorials for those interested in trying out the new trail.
