SALT LAKE CITY – Farmers markets across the state have begun their summer season, and several such markets are accepting food stamps–some of them for the first time.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is working with farmers markets to give individuals with low incomes an opportunity to incorporate whole food into their diets.

There are 19 markets across Utah that accept food stamps, and seven of them are accepting food stamps for the first time. Customers will be able to use their Horizon Card—which functions much like a debit card—to purchase the food.

Officials with the group Utahns Against Hunger helped recruit new markets using a USDA grant through the Department of Workforce Services, according to a press release from UAH.

Laura Flower, who is with Americorp/VISTA and is assigned to Utahns Against Hunger, stated in the press release: “Utahns Against Hunger is working to increase access to healthier food for all low-income Utahns, especially those we know are most at risk for food hardship.”

Flower said customers have certain restrictions on the food they can buy with food stamps, but she said things like fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese and other dairy products can all be purchased.

The list of markets accepting food stamps provided in the press release is reproduced below:
