SALT LAKE CITY — Before beginning to serve, missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are encouraged to get used to not having the digital devices they may have grown up with.

But after a pilot program in North America, Canada, Japan, and western Europe, missionaries will begin using digital devices in their daily work.

Starting later this year, missionaries will be asked to buy specially configured iPad minis for studying and teaching, which they’ll be able to keep after their missions.

Assistance is available for those who can’t afford the $400 price tag. LDS Church officials said they expect 32,000 missionaries in 162 missions to be using the devices by next year. The LDS Church also plans to implement online proselytizing in the U.S., Canada, Japan and western Europe.
