Police arrest suspect after man seriously injured in assault

WASHINGTON CITY, Utah – A man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and police were searching for two suspects after an assault outside a Washington City business Thursday; on Monday officials announced one suspect had been arrested.

Washington City Police stated Monday that 34-year-old Cody Sandberg of Washington City was arrested and booked into the Washington County Jail on one count of assault as a class A misdemeanor.

Officials stated in Monday’s press release that the man was located based on tips from the public, and they said they wished to thank media outlets who reported the incident and community members who came forward with information.

Police said the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. Thursday near the drive up window of a Polo Loco restaurant located at 745 W. Telegraph St.

According to the initial a press release from the Washington City Police Department, a newer model Honda Odyssey, black, with a “Desert Thunder” sticker or insignia on the back window exited the drive up window after receiving an order then stopped. A passenger in the minivan got into a verbal altercation with the driver of a truck behind the van at the drive up window.

The driver of the minivan then exited the vehicle and allegedly assaulted the victim before both suspects left the area at a high rate of speed.

The victim was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Officials stated in the press release that both suspects are described as being white males in their mid to late 20s. One of the men was described as having shoulder-length “scraggly” hair. Officials did not specify Monday if Sandberg was driving the minivan or was among the passengers.

Police ask anyone with information about the suspects or who may have seen the incident to contact them at 435-634-5730. Police stated that tipsters can remain anonymous and their information kept confidential.
