LAKE POWELL, Utah – A Salt Lake City man who was working at Bullfrog Marina for the summer drowned in Lake Powell Tuesday night, and the man’s body was recovered Thursday morning.
According to press release from Kane County officials, 22-year-old Alec McQueen was boating with two female friends in the Bullfrog area when the accident occurred.
The three are employees of Aramark and were living and working in the area for the summer. The three were returning to the dock area around 7 p.m., and as the boat pulled into a slip McQueen jumped off the boat and into the water.
The driver of the boat stated she could initially see the man in the water, but when she turned back a few seconds later she could not see him. The others in the boat called 911, and it was decided that the late hour would require the search to begin in the morning.
Dive teams worked Wednesday in water that was 90 feet deep with “zero visibility conditions.” The sonar equipment struggled to work in the area. A dive team from Summit County with divers, a robot and sonar arrived at about 4 a.m. Thursday morning, and about two hours later the crews located the body at a depth of 113 feet.
McQueen’s parents and siblings were on scene when the body was recovered.
According to the press release: “Thanks to all those involved in this difficult incident. Numerous agencies responded to the scene to include National Park Service, Utah State Parks, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, and Summit County Search and Rescue. The case remains under joint investigation.”
