LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A man and a woman who became lost while hiking in Little Cottonwood Canyon Sunday are safe.

Police were first notified of the missing hikers around 7 p.m.

Crews were able to locate the hikers about two miles from the White Pine trailhead.

The missing hikers were located using GPS coordinates from their cellphone and by having them yell toward search and rescue crews.

The hikers were able to walk down most of the way, but crews used ATVs to transport them to the trailhead at the end of the five hour search and rescue operation.

Det. Ken Hansen, Unified Police Department, offered some safety tips for people planning to go on hikes this season.

“The most important thing is to let people know where you’re going to go. Have a charged cellphone. Have the proper equipment. Have the proper footwear, the proper clothing, water and extra food,” Hansen said.

Police said the hikers were cold because they had only dressed for daytime hiking.
