SALT LAKE CITY -- Over 80 different kinds of birds flock to Liberty Park. And this year work is under way to make the lake more welcoming for its wildlife.

The project is funded by a grant from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. The money was awarded after the Chevron oil spill in Red Butte Creek all to help wildlife and improve quality of the Lake’s water.

Cost of the project is nearly $140,000.

The project is expected to be done in September but green fences will be surrounding the lake for the next year.

“One of the things about the wetland vegetation is when it’s very new we want to protect it from herbivore so we don`t want the birds to eat the plant material,” said Nancy Monteith, Parks and Public Lands Planning Manager.
