WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- Three men had to be transported to the hospital on Sunday after a two-vehicle-collision in West Valley City; two of the men were in serious condition and the other was in critical condition.

Hours after the crash, the intersection of 6200 South and Mountain View was still littered with broken car parts. It was around 1 p.m. when a silver Lexus and a white Chevy pickup collided.

"According to witnesses, they said the silver Lexus went through a red light and it was broadsided by that Chevy pickup," said Lt. Dalan Taylor of the West Valley City Police Department.

There were two adult men inside the truck, and they were both taken to the hospital in serious condition. A man and child were inside the Lexus. That man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"He took the brunt of the impact in the crash," Taylor said. "He actually had to be extracted out of the car. We did land a medical helicopter. Once he was out of the vehicle they did evaluate him and decided he could go by ground to the hospital."

The smashed up Lexus came to a stop about 100 feet off the highway, half way up an embankment. Police said the 4-year-old girl inside escaped without a scratch.

"Circumstances worked out well, she was on the opposite side of the car, she was buckled into her car seat and those things kept her from being injured," Taylor said.

Police can only speculate how the car ended up so far off the road.

"There really are no obstacles to keep it from going that far, you know in other areas there are curbs that could slow cars down, trees, light poles, things like that," Taylor said. "Out here there are not a whole lot of things that will slow the car down other than the dirt."

So far no charges have been filed in the crash and the investigation remains ongoing.
