WEBER COUNTY, Utah – Two inmates at the Weber County Jail assigned to a work crew at the Weber County Animal Shelter walked away from the facility Friday, and police have apprehended one of the two men.

Samuel Peter Atchley, 46, and Joseph Wayne Cook, 27, left the animal center between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

According to a press release from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, the pair walked to Harrisville City and tried to steal a bicycle from in front of a home on 1600 North. The owner of the home confronted the men, who tried to flee. Police were contacted by a citizen who witnessed the incident, and responding officers apprehended Atchley.

Cook has not been located, and officials believe he made his way to Ogden City. A warrant will be requested for his arrest, the press release stated.

Wahlquist Junior High School and Pioneer Elementary School were placed on lock-out protocols as a precaution while officers searched the area for Cook.

Cook is described as a white male who stands 5-feet 9-inches tall and weighs 145 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes and is pictured above. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact Weber dispatch officials at 801-629-8221.
