SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah – The Salt Lake County Jail has put a hold on their policy of charging inmates for their room and board during their incarceration.

A Utah judge recently ordered Davis County to stop the way they were collecting payments for their “Pay For Stay” program, and Salt Lake County officials said they have put their program on hold as a precaution while they review their procedures.

Jim Winder, Salt Lake County Sheriff, said they put their program on hold and are working with other authorities to ensure the program meets all requirements.

“I think the citizens expect that when an individual is incarcerated that he or she, if they’re capable, should be able to pay for a portion of their commitment, but it has to be done legally, it has to be done with due process, we understand that, but I don’t want the citizens to feel like this program, inherently, is a problem,” he said.
