According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. People of all ages and backgrounds are susceptible to the disease. The first step in treating heart disease is to recognize symptoms of the disease and work with your doctor to correctly diagnose heart disease. While there are many tests out there that can help with this detection, one the experts at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute are using as part of the My Heart Challenge is an EKG. The 15 firefighters from seven fire departments in Salt Lake County underwent an EKG Stress Test at the start of the Challenge to help establish a baseline and goals for what the firefighters can achieve during the 100 day Challenge.
FOX 13 News' Dave Nemeth also underwent the stress test, see the video above for the details, as well as a discussion with Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institutes' Michele Barker and Salt Lake City Fire Department Battalion Chief Karl Steadman.
