SALT LAKE CITY – One man was arrested and another man had his finger “just about severed off,” after a driver stopped his vehicle to confront a man who had thrown a cell phone and a beverage at the car.

Police said the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday near 900 West and 600 North when 28-year-old Tommy Tucker allegedly threw a can of soda and his cell phone at the victim’s vehicle.

Det. Cody Lougy of the Salt Lake City Police Department said the victim stopped the car and got out to confront the suspect, and an altercation began. The victim was treated at a hospital and was released in serious condition after he nearly lost his finger in the incident.

“This was a very serious stab wound,” Lougy said.

Lougy said the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with an unknown edged weapon. The suspect fled, but police were able to track him down using the cell phone the suspect had thrown at the victim’s car. Tucker was found hiding under his bed, according to information from police.

Tucker faces aggravated assault and obstruction of justice charges, and Lougy said the man was on parole. Lougy said they urge people not to stop and confront individuals in situations like this, as getting out of the vehicle can be dangerous.

“You never know what these guys are on, what kind of weapons they may have, and so this is something that could have been much more serious than what it was,” he said.
