SALT LAKE CITY -- Several law enforcement agencies across the state will be watching for impaired drivers who try to push their luck.

Here are a few examples of agencies that will be conducting DUI blitzes:

Ogden
50 officers from the Ogden Police Department will be looking for impaired drivers at 1400 N and Washington Blvd.

Utah Highway Patrol
The Utah Highway Safety Office has given UHP more than 75 extra DUI shifts to be utilized statewide and nearly 300 overtime shifts for police agencies to enforce DUI related offences this weekend, according to a statement from the Utah Department of Public Safety.

South Salt Lake and West Valley City
The South Salt Lake Police Department and the West Valley City Police Department have formed a task force to combat DUI in both cities. Dozens of officers from both departments will be looking for drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs.

"When you celebrate St. Patrick's Day, be smart about it. Plan ahead. If you know you are going to drink, at a bar or at a party, designate a sober driver ahead of time or call a taxi. Make sure you get home safely. There is never an excuse to drive after drinking and, especially on St. Patrick's Day, it's very likely that you'll have a chat with a law enforcement officer if you do", said West Valley Police Chief Lee Russo in a statement sent to FOX 13 News.

'A little drunk, a lot arrested'
Those who visit local bars this weekend may see additional reminders to drive sober.

The Utah Highway Safety Office and various law enforcement agencies have teamed up with over 40 bars across the Wasatch Front to remind patrons not to drink and drive via drink coasters and t-shirts to be worn by drink servers.

The coasters and t-shirts say "A little drunk, a lot arrested" and show an "unlucky" leprechaun dressed in jailhouse clothing.

Last year, Utah law enforcement agencies made more DUI arrests during the month of March than any other month.

Safety tips from the West Valley City and South Salt Lake combined task force:

  • Before the festivities begin, plan a way to safely get home at the end of the night.
  • Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.
  • If you're impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation to get home safely.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, report them! Dial 911! You could save a life.
  • Remember, if you know people who are about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get where they are going safely.
