SALT LAKE CITY -- A junior high school musical group played on the steps of the Utah Capitol Thursday, and the show was part of an effort to advocate for music education.

Members of the Utah Music Educators Association coordinated the event, and the percussion ensemble from Farmington Junior High School ensured the effort was accompanied by a drum roll.

Sam Tsugawa, president of the Utah Music Educators Association, spoke about their efforts.

"We want to get our message out: Music is an important part of the curriculum for our school children," he said. "Every child should have a chance to have a sequential music education by certified teachers throughout the state of Utah."

Composer Kurt Bestor was the keynote speaker at the event. FOX 13 News' Dave Nemeth was in attendance, see the video above for his live report and his interview with Bestor.
