Big Budah’s blog: Seeking surgical intervention

Man this week started off great. The only day I didn’t work out was Sunday, but I made it every day aside from that. Before this time, I was just doing three days a week, but I am now paying the price with an inflamed tendon from my heel bone spur…it hurts like shiz!

I tried the usual tricks of icing, elevating and taking pain meds but to no avail. I went to the Mountain View Foot Clinic to see Dr. Steven Royall, who is a foot specialist. Here’s what I learned: I have Retrocalcaneal Enthesophyte(heel spur) and Chronic Achilles Tendonitis.

Apparently the spur in my heel is huge and that’s why the pain is not going away like it used to in the past. I also have what is called Haglund’s Deformity. It is a bony enlargement on the back of the heel. It is often called the “pump bump” because the rigid backs of pump-style shoes that women wear can create pressure that aggravates the tendon so the deformity is most common in young women who wear pumps.

Doctor Royall says to me jokingly “I don’t care what you do on your own time, but I don’t judge.” At least I think he was joking.

Anyway, after discussing my options I have decided to go with the surgery next Friday. My reasons are so I am back on my feet as soon as possible and I don’t let this heel spur be my “Achilles Heel” on my journey to better health.

I cannot allow this painful heel spur sideline me anymore. To provide relief I am outfitted with a new longer boot to help isolate the foot from movement and take pressure off the tendon and some pain meds. In the meantime, I will sport a new boot and I can’t wait for Friday to come.

Thank you all for the support!
