UTAH COUNTY — Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office say they have received reports from residents who were called by someone posing as a deputy asking for money to pay off a warrant.

This is a scam that has been seen in the past and has resurfaced, police said in a statement Tuesday.

According to police, the caller has used the name of a deputy currently employed at the sheriff’s office.

In recent cases the caller has asked that victims give them a debit card number or go to a nearby store and purchase a cash card. They are then asked to call back with pin information for that card to pay off the supposed fine.

Other law enforcement agencies in Utah County have encountered similar reports.

Employees with the sheriff’s office do call to remind people of warrants and how they can clear them up or pay the fine.

“What legitimate employees will never do is ask for payment of bail over the phone,” according the statement. “If an employee of the sheriff’s office calls they can tell you options for payment but that will not include asking for any kind of credit, debit or other financial information.”
